He was the seventh child in his family. His father, Juho, owned the Mattila farm, and his mother, Katriina, was a loving and hardworking farmer’s wife. The farm was quite modern for its time, with fields equipped with sub-surface drains that allowed the growing of sugar beets for animal food.
