Sample Book Insights:#1 There have been many sightings of UFOs on radar, and in July 1966, the Federal Aviation Agency tower at the Greensboro-High Point Airport picked up an unidentified flying object. Several police officers in the High Point-Randolph County area also saw unidentifiable objects buzzing the area.#2 The government’s official position toward flying saucers has been negative since 1953, although a great deal of attention has been paid to the subject behind the scenes. In 1966, a flap occurred, and the then-Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara, had been well briefed by the Air Force before the subject was interjected into a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.#3 The government’s attitude has helped foster the general disinterest of the press in the subject of UFOs. As a result, most of the reported UFO activity has gone unnoticed.#4 I had to travel to the various flap areas and interview the witnesses in depth, applying the journalistic techniques I had learned from being a reporter and writer for two decades. I rarely gave the witnesses any information in return.
