It was first diagnosed in 1912 as a symptom of childhood schizophrenia.#3 The DSM-5, published in 2013, changed the definition of autism to include more symptoms, and therefore, more people could be diagnosed with it.#4 I am a beneficiary of the changes brought about by the ADA and IDEA. I was born in 1990, the year the ADA was passed, and the changes to IDEA were made around the time my family moved to Wisconsin. I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when I was a college student.
